In this issue we'll learn a little more about John Deere. John Deere has been aggressively pursuing electrification of their vehicles to increase productivity and reduce operating cost. Electrification projects range from adding small electrical motors to improve cabin comfort to creating a hybrid drive system by incorporating traction motors. There are many benefits to electrifying heavy machinery. Besides the obvious reduction in fuel consumption and improvement in ride quality, you can also improve tire life through active traction control in a hybrid tractor. As you would imagine, replacing tires on a wheel loader is a costly repair! And plans to continue development of electric machines. Tetsuo Ogawa recently sat down with Jim Shoemaker to learn more about what John Deere is doing and how they are using JMAG.

Choose JMAG moving forward to 3D analysis

The Permanent Magnet Motor Expert Group at Bern University of Applied Sciences focuses their research on permanent magnet synchronous machines with high torque and power density. The use of JMAG allows them to predict with a high degree of precision the performance and losses of their designs. Since 2008 they have started using 3D FEA to get better results for special motor geometries like dual air-gap motors or to predict the influence of different winding systems.

Use of JMAG in Renewable Energy Research

In May, 2012, JMAG's Taiwan distributor, Flotrend, held a JMAG Users Conference in Taiwan attended by around 60 JMAG users.
The JMAG Users Conference benefitted from the cooperation of Associate Professor Min-Fu Hsieh, a researcher at Taiwan National Cheng Kung University's Electric Motor Technology Research Center (EMTRC), and, like in Japan, saw a lively exchange of ideas among engineers. This edition of Implementing JMAG is brought by the Institute for Electrical Energy Conversion, Technische Universität Darmstadt in Germany.
Technische Universität Darmstadt has a long history, having been established in 1877, and is a central figure in German motor and generator research. The Institute for Electrical Energy Conversion uses JMAG to design cutting edge generators.

Using a merger with Schneider Electric S.A. and making the leap to become aleading company in the electromagnetic switch market

Fuji Electric FA Components & Systems Co., Ltd. is the leader in control instruments, such as electromagnetic switches that use electromagnets to open and close the contact points of electrical circuits.
In 2008 they merged with the Japanese arm of Schneider Electric S.A., the second largest manufacturer in the same field. By merging the former Fuji Electric, the market leader in Japan, with the former Schneider, who provides the know-how of a global company, they are leading the market with a combination of global product power and solution proposals that have high added value. They are using "JMAG", JSOL's electromagnetic field analysis software, at their development site. We asked Mr. Masayoshi Sakata, the manager of the development and technical analysis group at Fuji Electric's technology and development headquarters and the driving force behind utilizing simulation, about how he uses JMAG.

The Nidec Corporation, a top manufacturer of small precision motors used in devices such as hard disk drives and CD-ROM drives, entered the automotive market with a mid-size motor for power steering in 2000. The tool that facilitated their growth and success in a market the Nidec Corporation had little experience or knowledge was JMAG, an electromagnetic field analysis software from the JSOL Corporation. Less than 10 years have passed and the Nidec Corporation has grown to hold roughly 10% of the market share. Mr. Hitoshi Inoue, head of development for the Nidec Corporation, and Mr. Nakaba Kataoka discuss the merits of implementing the JMAG system.
